The Tigers are one of just 20 schools nationwide chosen for Team Adidas, and the only high school in Pennsylvania. Here's what the deal covers, and what it means for families in the district.

The Tigers have earned their stripes. North Allegheny Athletics announced Monday that it has agreed to a multi-year partnership with Adidas America, joining what the company calls its Team Adidas Top 20 Schools program. Twenty high schools in the country made the list. North Allegheny is the only one in Pennsylvania.

For a district that fields one of the largest and most decorated athletic programs in the WPIAL, the selection is a statement about where high school sports are headed: toward the kind of head-to-toe apparel partnerships that were, until recently, the territory of college athletic departments.

What the agreement covers

Under the deal between Adidas and the North Allegheny School District, the majority of NA's athletic teams will transition to Adidas uniforms, apparel, footwear, headwear, and accessories over the coming years. The district describes the agreement as a significant investment in its athletic programs and its athletic identity. Financial terms were not disclosed in the announcement.

The agreement itself applies only to the district's athletic department, but the reach extends further into the community. Affiliated organizations, including booster clubs, PTA groups, North Allegheny youth programs, and district parents, are eligible for preferred pricing on Adidas products through the partnership, with discounts the district lists at up to 40 percent off retail on apparel, uniforms, and accessories and up to 35 percent on footwear.

Participation is optional for boosters and youth organizations. But in a district where thousands of families buy cleats, uniforms, and warmups every season, the discounts may end up mattering as much as what the varsity teams wear on Friday nights.

BSN Sports will serve as the official supplier of Adidas products for North Allegheny Athletics.

The bigger picture

Apparel companies have spent decades competing for college programs. The push into elite high school athletics is newer, and the Top 20 program amounts to Adidas planting flags at the programs it considers the country's best showcase for its brand. That the Pennsylvania flag landed in Wexford, ahead of the state's private powerhouses and city programs, says something about how the company sizes up North Allegheny's combination of enrollment, facilities, and trophy cases.

The uniforms will change gradually as teams cycle through replacement schedules, meaning Tiger fans will watch the transition play out sport by sport over the next few seasons, starting with fall athletics already around the corner: the football team opens its broadcast slate against North Hills on August 28.
